The eclipse

During the early hours of the morning of 9th November 2003 a total eclipse of the moon occurred. The moon only just passed inside the shadow of the earth, so the period of totality was quite short - less than half an hour - and the southern side of the moon always appeared a little brighter.

The eclipse was visible from St Ives, although a band of thin cloud that partly obscured the view drifted past around midnight, and later a fog descended creating a hazy view of a moon with a halo. However, the view during the period of totality was clear.
